Hey guys, what acronyms do you use to help remember concepts and memorize facts? I try and make acronyms for Biology and Chem stuff, as it helps me remember things easier. Please, if you have any that you found especially helpful, post them! Here are some of the one's I've been using that have helped me.

Sohcahtoa - Sin = opp/hyp Cos = adj/hyp Tan = opp/adj

OIL RIG - Oxidation Is Loss of e- , Reduction Is Gain of e-

KPCOFGS - I know it's not really an acronym...but somehow I can remember this. Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species

Any other one's that you have, please share them 😀

Hopefully this will be a useful thread for everyone👍

lol.....

here's the good one

Anterior Pituitary gland produces: FLAT PEG!

FSH
LH
ACTH
TSH
PROLACTIN
ENDORPHIN
GH

King Philip Came Over For Great Spaghetti (KPCOFGS)

Red Cat, An Ox (Reduction occurs in Cathode, Oxidation takes place in Anode)

Great website for pneumonics.

Some of those Mnemonics are wayyyy to long. It is hard to remember them, and thus defeats the purpose. For example:

Meta-Directing Groups on a Benezene Ring

  • "Queen Elizabeth Second's Navy Commands, Controls, Communicates"
    • Q Quaternary amino -NR3+
      E Ester -COOR
      S Sulfonic acid -SO3H
      N Nitro -NO2
      C Carbonyl -CHO
      C Carboxyl -COOH
      C Cyano -CN
Now thinking about it...I would much rather have something that makes no sense, but is shorter and easier for me to remember. Something like M-NESQ(C)^3

Easier for me to remember....M-NESQ(C)^3 = Meta-nesk(pronounced desk, but with n) C cubed. Easier for me

Here's a good one for the pathway of sperm through the male body... It spells "Seven Up"

Seminiferous tubules
Epididymis
Vas Deferens
Ejaculatory Duct
N(othing) <-- this is kind of weird but you just have to remember it, haha
Urethra
Penis

I've never seen a question about that pathway on any of my practice tests so far but you never know... Haha.

LOL I love the "Go Sally Go! Make Children!" for the cell cycle...its just ridiculous enough to remember. Oh and the "Sensual People Do Foreplay" for spdf...hahah

Hydrogen Bonding is FON! (F-H, O-H, N-H)

Alkane Naming
MEPB (Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl, Butyl, the rest are common sense)

Adrenal Glands (SSSS)
Salt:Aldosterone
Sugar: Glucocorticoids
Sex: testosterone, Androgens
Sympathetics: Epinephrine, Nor epinephrine

ADH: Always digging holes (in distal tubule and collecting ducts of kidney)

"CUT" the "PY": Cytosine, Uracil, Thymine are Pyrimidines.

Money making metals are expensive because they don't get Oxidized. (platinum, Gold, silver, mercury, copper always go under reduction). NICKEL is an exception.

An Ant in a mirror is an enantiomer.

"D-Sugars" are Delicious

This is not exactly an acronym, but helps me keep NMR straight:
When I feel down (Downfield), I am "Deshielded" with no energy (my electrons are withdrawn by e-withdrawing groups), and I feel as lonely as H in Aldehyde.....Now I need a hug

To remember whether cis/trans alkenes have higher melting/boiling points:

A cyst is like a boil on your skin = cis alkenes have higher BP
Trans fats (like margarine) melt = trans alkene have higher MP

Well done!

Looks like all the SDN's are crashing the site...lol👍

or for the guys..

Older fellas:
Kelly Preston Came Over For Great Sex

Younger fellas:
Kelly Pickler Came Over For Great Sex

hahah! Sorry, had to bring that out.

How bout some Kal Penn for the ladies? lol 😀

this is my kaplan instructor's:

Kinky People Cry Out For Great Sex

she also said the dirtier the acronym, the easier it is to remember. hahahahaha

Ectoderm- NEEET (Nervous, Epidermis, Ear, Eye, Teeth)

Endoderm- BLT PLD (Bladder, Lungs, Thyroid, Pancreas, Liver, Digestive)

Mesoderm- MSG CK (Muscle, skeletal, Gonads, Circulatory, Kidney)

For endoderm/ectoderm i know it looks like a lot of random letters.. but think of it as BLT (like the sandwich) and then PLD kinda sounds like BLT and for mesoderm think it stars with an M so MSG (like that shi* in your food that is bad for you) and then CK like calvin kline (sp?) hahaha it worked for me at least.

For the insulin and glucagon think

I be gay or IB GA... meaning Insulin=Beta cells and Glucagon= alpha cells

Also it was prob already mentioned... but

LEO goes GER (oxidation is loss of electrons and reductions is gain of electrons)

AN OX, RED CAT (anode=oxidation, Reduction=cathode)

this is a good one for the cranial nerves I found: I dont know if its covered in the DAT?

Oh Oh Oh Topless Tiffany And Fat Valery Got Vaginitis And Hepatitis

lmao!!!

I pride myself on this creation...
Chris (Cosmic) Got (Gamma rays) X-Ray (X-rays) UV (Ultra Violet rays) Vision (Visible Rays) In Return (InfraRed rays) for Microwaves and Radiowaves.

And I remembered Micro before radio b/c of M comes before R in the alphabet. It's up to you to remember which way is increasing length and frequency. This device helped keep they in a constant order though. It worked for me b/c I still remember it
I also go this question on my DAT👍

I don't wanna sound immature, but this one REALLY helped me in biology

RPOS (Are Piece Of Sh!t)

R-regulator P-promotor O-operator S-structural

I used to hate the regulation of genes, and I never remembered which is which and which order they came in. So I used to think of them as regulation of genes "Are Piece Of ****"... so I came up with that. I did have 1 question on my biology that mainly dealt with this, if I hadn't memorized it with RPOS, I woulda never remembered lol
