This may be a stupid question, but why do so many people add S to the acronym? I always thought it was MCAT and not MCATS. Am I missing something here? What does it stand for, if anything? Could it be Medical College Admission Test Score???

It is indeed MCAT. But you may commonly hear it referred to as the "MCATs". Example: "GOSH. The MCATs sure screwed me over."

Reason: 1.) maybe some people have taken it multiple times, or, more ostensibly, 2.) the test is sooo long/grueling that the test-taker has a psychological trauma and interprets the experience as a set of multiple tests, administered in a consecutive slew of mind-numbing bombardments.

LOL, it could very well be the 2nd reason. I sure felt that way after taking the "MCATS".

Hmmm, I actually rather like the idea of having the additional S in the acronym... I will contact the AAMC immediately and encourage them to rename it, the

"Medical College Admission Test, Suck'ahs."

That way, the acronym could officially be MCATS and we can end all the confusion. Please note the comma and apostrophe... you simply most have the apostrophe. It is imperative that it be "suck'ahs" and not "suckers". 👍

ppl do it to every standardized test, its stupid, i hate it too. mcats, sats, gmats, lsats. ? dunno why, unless they plan on taking it more than once ha. one thing i havent heard is GREs, it has something to do with those ATS.

personally, i haaaaaaaaaate it when someone asks me, "what was the mcats?"

What gets to me a bit is the guy at my school who always tells me how he's going to "kill the cats" when he "has to take the MCATS" & repeatedly asks me: "How were the cats?"

I generally say "The MCAT is/was pretty hard."
