I took the ACT last month and got a 25. That was after minimal practice and studying. I had only finished the Princeton ACT book and only 1 practice test. I'm planning on getting 31-33. I have bought the REAL ACT prep book, the official online ACT prep and Kaplan's review guide. Does anyone have some tips they are willing to share with me on how to prepare for the ACT?
Also, I am planning to take the Princeton ACT Ultimate Class. Does anyone have any past experience with it? All the reviews I'm finding online are about the SAT review and they are not very reassuring about this class. Thank you

Hey I took the ACT a few years ago (I was a junior in 2010!) and the first time around I scored a 28 (took one practice test and got like a 25 i think)

I was aiming for a 30 so i retook it once. English and reading were my strongest subjects so I focused on getting a nearly perfect score in those areas. By focusing on what I knew and trying to improve on what I knew, my score went up 3 points and I ended with a 31

My english and reading subscores went from a 27 and 26 respectively to 34 and 34. Five years later I'm graduating with my bachelor's degree and starting dental school 🙂

Hope this helps!

Hello, Im a Senior in high school and took the SAT once and the ACT 4 times. The first test i took was the ACT at the end of my junior year, i scored a 27 first try with no studying. Then i took the summer off and took the ACT a second time in August and received a 29 (these are all composite scores by the way, im not superscoring) then my parents suggested the SAT, i took it in November and got got a 1880 and decided that it wasnt for me. Then i took a 4 week ACT Prep course at my local tutoring chain (C2 education, not sure if they are across the nation or solely located in GA.) My final ACT I took in December I scored a 34 Composite. For my studying guides i bought the giant red ACT book, its the only study book produced by ACT for the ACT, i reviewed 2-3 nights a week a month leading up to each exam, however if you need quick results and have $ i would highly advise the tutoring for SAT/ACT/ Personally, (not looking at the fine details of the scholarship) I would say for your case id try the tutoring though dont get discouraged if you cant make the 6 point jump all at once, my score is a rarity. Remember that these are standardized tests and are thinking based, its all about acclimating yourself to the test because it doesnt work the other way around 🙂

Raising your score from a 25 to a 31 is going to take some serious effort. One of the main differences between the SAT and the ACT is time. On average the ACT gives you much less time per question. While practicing can help, you'll find that increasing your overall speed on the test can be very challenging. You might consider switching to the SAT, as it is easier to prep for.

As for tutoring, spend your money on a private tutor or stick to books. Princeton Review or Kaplan classes can raise your score but not efficiently enough to warrant the cost. You'd be better off grinding you way through the ACT Official Practice Test book and maybe a Barrons or McGraw Hill test prep book on your own. Practice is going to make the biggest difference on a time test like the ACT.

Well, what seemed to be a big issue on each of the sections? Time? Content? I just took mine in December and still applied to schools, so I am pretty updated on this. Let me know what your issue is so we can key in on that and I can give you advice. I took it freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year (freshman and sophomore year were never sent anywhere).

My problem was time and content for reading, but content for most of it. I've been taking a good amount of practice tests and I bought 4 textbooks. I've raised my score from 25 to an average of 30. I still have 2 and a half months until i take the ACT.
