Action Alert: Ask Your Member of Congress to Cosponsor the New Truth and Transparency Legislation

On January 26, Rep. John Sullivan (R-OK) and David Scott (D-GA) introduced H.R. 451, the "Healthcare Truth and Transparency Act of 2011." This legislation would provide consumers and patients more information in this confusing health care marketplace. Right now, patients lack information about the wide variety of individuals who work in health care settings, and they are confused by the increasing ambiguity of health care provider-related advertising, marketing and degree titles. Precious health care dollars are being wasted on poor and uninformed health care choices by consumers.

Currently, there is little "transparency" associated with the most fundamental and important component of health care delivery – the many health professionals who interface with patients each day. H.R. 451 would significantly advance patient empowerment and prudent expenditure of health care dollars by enhancing information flow to patients and addressing the lack of clarity in health care provider advertisements, marketing and self-identification.

Contact your state leaders and urge them to support this bill so that CRNA DNPs and SRNAs don't introduce themselves as "residents" and "doctor XYZ".

I scanned the legislation and it doesn't look like it really does a alot. So people have to list their licensed credentials. Probably won't stop DNPs from calling themselves "doctor." They do have a doctorate, after all...🙄

this issue will be fought at the institutional level. you will never be able to mandate federally that someone with a DNP/PhD not call themselves doctor.

The point is that a nurse, whether LPN or DNP, will have to identify themselves as a nurse. Similarly, a PA or AA must identify themselves as a PA or AA (oh wait, we already do that).

Go back and read page 3 of the bill closely. They aren't required to tell anyone what their training is when interacting with patients (unless asked, I suppose). They simply can't call themselves something they aren't. In advertising, they have to include their license (DNP or whatever). Thats it. Thats all the bill does. In other words, not much.

On edit- if it were to truly have teeth, it would require people to identify their credentials, solicited or not, when initiating contact with patients. It doesn't do that.

I've noticed at many hospitals these days they are changing the badges - making the credentials BIG, BOLD, and different colors per credential type, while reducing the name size. I think it's a good idea. I think the CRNA badge should state "CRNA, I AM NOT A DOCTOR"

Doesn't prevent them from wearing the badge backwards like lots of women do.

So true, thats why the badges at my hospital are actually double-sided! Big "MD" letters on front AND back.

yeah its required that we wear two badges facing back to back so they can be read from either side...i didnt worry about it so much as a resident, but you better believe when i hit attending i make sure its always visible
