This is a premed horror story but sadly very real and I’m still kind of in shock and processing it. I’m recently finding out that when AMCAS submitted my primary application to the schools I applied to, several have been receiving an incomplete list of activities. Some have gotten the full list. But others, One activity has been missing. The missing culprit? SHADOWING.

I have no idea what to do. AMCAS is not helpful, repeatedly telling me they can’t do anything. And understandably, the schools I’ve contacted aren’t sure either.


What school is gonna want to invite someone who apparently doesn’t have shadowing?? I feel like I’m screwed. Am I the only one that has experienced this this year? This is the unluckiest I have ever been.

Wright state has a competency section on their secondary that has you match your activities to their competencies. I noticed here that one was missing. So I started contacting my other schools and.... 🙁

How many schools seem not to have gotten the info?
Perhaps you should contact AMCAS and speak to a supervisor and patiently explain what you have discovered and ask for help in rectifying the situation. Did you by any chance print out your application before you submitted it?

do you have a completed pdf of submitted AMCAS?

Yes, my verified pdf confirms all activities. AMCAS also confirms it through both email and phone. I’ve talked to 2 people and emailed them, and they always say they can’t do anything about it

At least two, and they have completely different portal systems. And at least one definitely had all 14. I’m still in the process of contacting schools to see what’s going o. So far the general response I’ve gotten is “wow sorry that’s weird! We can’t do anything though, tough luck”

Wow, that is crazy. I would definitely try and escalate to speak with a supervisor at AMCAS. You could also write a blurb in the secondaries that mentions the issue and/or upload a copy of your AMCAS pdf if they allow extra documents to be uploaded.

I realize each admissions office likely can't do anything to fix the issue, but I figured they would at least be receptive to writing a note regarding the situation.

Is shadowing your first or last activity listed on the pdf? I'm wondering if maybe the system to parse the information got screwed up, and others might be missing an activity as well. I did not apply to Wright, so I can't look to if mine was affected.

Could you maybe include it in an "anything else" essay in secondaries, or as an update if you have already sent secondaries?

I definitely believe this would be a sufficient reason to utilize the anything else essay and email each school. This should not happen as the whole PDF is transmitted, however it looks like it did...so no clue. That is odd.

It’s like the second or third to last activity that I listed. Just my luck that of all activities that went missing, it was one of the most important ones 🙁
