So here's my question. UCSF and UOP and im sure many other schools say on their websites that they have X amount of interviews and X amount of acceptances from those interviews. So when is the majority of applicants interviewed? Will UCSF intervew 80 students before dec. 1 and accept 75, and then interview 200 more for the remaining 5 students? If so, then the acceptance rate is not indicative of the "real" accecptance rate.

UOP said they interview 120 applicants prior to Dec.1. They also said they accept 97% of those they interview. However, they end up interviewing around 300 applicants for 140 spots. So, typically only 50% of those who interview at UOP decide to enroll. In my opinion, if you've got the stats and you really want to go to UOP, you'll get your chance.

Sure it is indicative, because they are still interviewing 280 and accepting 80. The time frame in which they accept has nothing to do with the acceptance rate.

You are forgetting that even if a school accepts 100 people, not all of the acceptees will put down deposits. Remember, most of us are applying to many schools and we can't attend all of them.

Good point. Also, you need to remember that there is a huge difference in the percentage of accepted students that schools to attend there.

97 percent sounds pretty high. I wonder what those 3 percent did not to get accepted.

I think they say 97% because it leaves the door open a crack. Also, they can't tell you for sure that your in until Dec. 1, so they are playing the game a little. By not saying 100%, they are still playing by the rules. Honestly, I think the initial screening is the tough part. Once you get an interview, it's because they REALLY want you. In fact, the whole interview feels like a recruiting visit rather than a traditional interview.

Good to hear that. 🙂

Actually you guys need to keep in mind that this year there are 9800 applicants already. Meaning that we have alot more competition, meaning that there are alot less spots per student. so your chances of getting in, no matter when you interview are alot slimmer.

But the competition could be in your favor. So what the # of applicants is up. It doesn't mean the quality of applicants is up.

Maybe there are more 2.9-3.1 applying...who knows 😕 \

I highly doubt that all these new people are 3.4+ with 19+

Its like taking a crap. If I took a small dump in the morning and big one at night, it doesn't mean the quailty of my crap was better at night

Actually from what I have been hearing at my interviews is that the trend this year have been alot higher stats. THe reason being that alot of pre-med students are realizing that medicine is too comeptitive, the health care system is out of wack, and dentistry provides more money than medicine. These are all the wrong reasons to pursue dentistry. But nonetheless the applicant numbers are up and so are the stats.

Interesting and very very very very very sad!

Those that think denistry is an alternative to medicine are so wrong. Its very different and by no means a back up option. I have a classmate that is a med turn down and dental backup and hates it... they are even thinking of leaving

Recent average matriculant GPA/DAT show that is not the case. This year maybe an exception, but I doubt it.

Remember, as the size of application pool goes up, the percentage of those with good GPA/DAT is likely to go up, as well as with those poor GPA/DAT. Overall, the probability of the overall pool being competitve will (likely) be higher. Again, this is a professional school application... I would assume most people will apply very well prepared, and with competitive grades.

I might be wrong... just my opinion. 😀
