Hi all,

Is it unheard of to add an md degree to a phd degree? I know that sometimes md students will register in the phd program in the second year of the md program, but what about the other way around?

thanks,

yes it is possible - and a few people do it. i was just interviewing at penn with a feller that was doing just that. he was also applying out to 5 other programs, and has not encountered any problems with that. however, a guy who is doing his phd at ucsf is encountering problems with his own institution - so i'd check it out on a case by case basis.

I was wondering the same thing. It seems that some programs have "backdoor" options like this that people are unaware of. Ask physics md about this, he seems to know alot.

Hey, I'm a PhD student at BU right now, and there they don't let you start the MD program until you finish your PhD. I realised that I wanted to do medicine a year into my PhD, and now I am taking the MCAT in April and applying for 2004. I believe that if you are accepted to medical schools but haven't defended yet, you are allowed to defer one year in order to complete your defense. That's a pain, though... If anyone wants any more info, I'd be glad to help.

An Anthro PhD did what you've described then he wrote a book about his experiences (which i'm recommending)

He complained that med school was hard b/c he was 1) old 2) had a family (w/ children)
