So I found out today from my advisor that I could add another major by only taking two classes. This would give me a major in Biology B.S. and Molecular and Cellular Biology B.S. What are everyones thoughts on this. My GPA is pretty good so far is in the 3.6-3.7 range. One of the classes pretty much an easy A and the other is more challenging. Is it really worth the extra work or should I just take the easy senior year I have earned by taking so many classes early. I am a junior so I have some time to decide and both classes would fall into my senior year. Thanks for any input / advice.

With respect to your application, it won't make too much of a difference since medical schools know that double majors like this are pretty easy to get.

Then again, it won't really hurt either.

I was in a similar situation, I had an extra semester and I could have gotten a biology degree outside of my degree in chemistry. Instead, I minored in Philosophy, and took some really interesting classes that were a far sight removed from what I had been studying for the past 4 years. I also took a few semesters of guitar.

My advice would be to either take it easy, maybe get a job and save some extra cash, or take some unrelated finger painting classes because it will be a few years before you can devote a significant portion of your time to something that is not medicine.

It really wont make much of a difference. I mean two classes in the overall scheme of your GPA? But if it's only 2 classes, why the hell not right? Just make sure that the school actually gives you your second diploma otherwise that's just lame. I know many kids who double/triple majors and got jipped of their diplomas.

uhh, you don't get an actual second diploma. it's just a note on your transcript.

OP, take the classes if you want to. it won't ever make a difference to anyone else.

That's a little redundant... and stupid.

So when somebody asks you what you majored in you are really going to say "cell biology and biology" ???

My university doesn't even grant more than one major if they have the same course abbreviation (such as BIOL or CHEM etc.)

well that's stupid. why do the extra work then if you can't post it on the wall? stupid universities.

I agree with the above. OP, forget that crap.

You could simplify things and tell them you majored in biology(cell + 1).

At UW a double degree is given out if the student accumulates more than 240 credits (I believe that's the amount.) A double major is awarded if the student receives under 240 credits.

It makes sense. In OPs situation they would only need to take two extra classes, which doesn't really show a true commitment to the field, but rather an overlap of classes.

not worth it since they're so similar. the post above was good, take some completely unrelated classes. It's more fun, plus, it makes for a good set of talking points in interviews for a lot of different potential questions.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I don't think I am going to take those classes anymore. I might have the chance to take Greek actually. I'm getting a Bible minor so I think that might be a cool addition. Thanks for the input. Would you recommend taking above a certain credit limit or not. I only have to take 12 hours until I graduate because I have so many already but just wanted to make sure that wouldn't be looked down upon at all. I just don't really want to pay for classes that I don't need.
