Additional Degrees for Derm Residency

How important are the benefits for having additional degrees such as an MPH or PhD when applying to residency in derm? Would an MPH be more worthy than a case report publication in a research lab, for example?

I may hit disagreement on this matter, but speaking as a current MPH candidate, don't work on an MPH just to bolster your chances at a Dermatology residency spot. Work on an MPH if you're interested in health policy/clinical sciences.

Forum disclaimer: I'm in no way insinuating that you personally would work on an MPH just for the prior purpose.

Incidentally, it's obviously an EXCELLENT time to be working on an MPH with all that is going on currently.

The PhD helps greatly but only if you can show genuine interest in research.

I haven't heard of an MPH being of great help and I would echo Dral's sentiment of not pursuing this degree solely for a chance at a derm residency.

sounds good guys...I asked this because the NRMP stats usually state people with additional degrees who apply and match...so I was wondering basically how relevant the MPH degree factored into those cases?

i think my mph probably helped me get interviews. i guess it didn't help me match, though 😛

some interviewers were pretty impressed by it (saying things like "what can we do to get you to come here?" or "i am really impressed with your background and will put in a good word for you"), but i guess others could care less!

The PhD is why I matched. And God's grace. I would think it depends on what your research is in.

really? I thought it was just the opposite. If you have an MBA, they'll think you are DEFINiTELY in it for the money and are not going to do research
