It seems having a PhD is very helpful when applying to residency programs. I had assumed any extra degree would be at least somewhat useful in applying to residency programs. One forum said that having an MBA might actually be disadvantageous when applying to residency programs. Is this the case? What about being an MD/PhD/MBA when applying to residencies? How about MD/MS or MD/MPH?

For AMGs, yeah.... for others... wont mean that much. Just go look at the stats at www.nrmp.org... You're a phd, i'm sure you can figure out the Odds ratio shown. 😉

If you're getting the degree just to make yourself more competitive then that is 1) sad and 2) very ill advised. People who get PhDs before residency are with rare exception doing it because it was part of a prior career or they are academic minded and want that a part of their future career.

As for MBA, if you want to do it, do it, but don't do it just because you think it might help your application.

There are many things that make up a residency application.
