ADEA membership

Why does it say on the ADEA website that "[FONT=lucida sans unicode, lucida sans, trebuchet ms, trebuchet, sans-serif]Membership in ADEA is optional and NOT a prerequisite for admission to dental school."? Isn't that how we apply to dental school?? how could it not be a prereq? Is there a different type of membership for predental students?.

I believe you have to register with them to take the DAT, but you do not have to join the actual organization itself.
