I thought ADH was made in the hypothalamic nuclei and then sent down to the posterior pituatary. On more than one released exam, i have found the question

Answer: cells of posterior hypophysis(ie pituatary)

Any thoughts on this?

ADH is secreted in the posterior pituitary, but it is produced in the anterior hypothalamus.... more specifically, the paraventricular nucleus. It is transported by neuronal axons to be stored in the post pit until release.

Check this page out:

Actually, ADH (aka vasopressin) is synthesized in both supraoptic and paraventricular, but predominantly in the supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus (about 5/6th of the ADH is made in the supraoptic, while the rest of the 1/6th is made in the paraventricular nucleus). ADH is then released via axons to the posterior pituitary (aka nuerohypophysis).

I too have seen that question and still don't understand why they state that ADH is made in the posterior hypophysis. Again, it is made/synthesized in the hypothalamic nucleus.
