Adjustment of status applying for residency/fellowship

Hello, was wondering if anyone had experience applying for residency or fellowship while on adjustment of status? I'm doing so through marriage, and currently has my EAD card. Also on H1B and finishing my residency. I have heard that fellowships with J1 will not interview you without a green card in hand, is that true? Thank you all!

The EAD gives you permission to work. The only problem I could envision is not getting the green card approved when you have the fellowship already. That sounds unlikely, but the orange man.
