Hi, I'm an upcoming senior planning to apply for optometry school in August. I was hoping someone could give me a realistic idea of whether or not I have any chance of being accepted. I am a Biology major with an overall gpa of 3.27 (3.7 over my last two semesters, including organic chem and physics II). My extracurriculars are as follows: secretary, vice president, and two other chairman positions in my fraternity, director of comm. service for an on campus organization, part of committe for a local festival raising money for the boys and girls club, currently organizing a 5k run to help raise money to build a playground for disabled children, habitat for humanity, a member of a leadership and honors society, etc...I also have around 40 hours or so of optometrist shadowing experience, but will have more by the time I apply. I've yet to take the OAT (taking it in 4 days!), and realize my score will probably have to be nothing short of spectacular. Anyway, if someone could help me out in any way, it would be greatly appreciated....Thanks!

Depends on what university/college you went to, but your GPA + Extra Curr. are still good...enough to get interviews. Good luck with your OATs!

Thanks, that makes me feel a little better....does anybody know of anyone to get in with a similar gpa?

I had below a 3.3 as well, and know a lot of people who got in with below that. The avg GPA for most schools is 3.3/3.4, so you figure with the way averages work, a good portion of students have below that average. Check:www.opted.org to see the school's averages, so you can get a general feel of where you'll be competitive.

if you dont mind my asking, how well did you do on your oat? you can pm me if youd like

Hey JCM,

I had a 3.15 GPA when I applied late in the application process to two schools. I was worried about my GPA being that low, but I got interviews from two schools and got accepted to one and standby for the other. You have excellent extra curr. and experiences so the only other thing that would really make you competitive is to do well on the OAT. I scored a 330 AA and 360 TS. Well, GOOD LUCK with the OAT. My advice is to get some rest the night before the test so you have energy to make it through the whole test and don't worry too much about it.
