How much does an advanced degree (I'm not talking PhD... more like a MPH or MS) help during the match process? Is it ever brought up during interviews? Does it really make you a much better candidate?

Does anybody have any experience with this?

Thanks

Very little at most places.

It will be of interest, if your future career plans are such that the advanced degree will be helpful. But for most people an advanced degree short of a PhD will not make a significant difference in matching.

(read below for posts in which others state that their degree helped them)

NRMP has some statistics on this for AMGs. PhDs do help AMGs... but MS/MA/MBA/MPH seem to be less helpful for them. I bet it's similar for IMGs/FMGs but to a lesser extent... especially if the degree is not from the US.

I have a Master's - it was brought up during my interviews, but no more often than the fact that I coached youth soccer or anything else in my hobbies list. The real key is the research that you do while earning your advanced degree. I was asked about my thesis and presenting it at committee meetings in every interview I went to.
