When do advanced CA-1 positions usually start? Does orientation begin on July 1 or is it days/weeks before July 1st? I'm a current resident in a different specialty who will be working until the near bitter end of June and was wondering if that would end up being problematic. Thanks!

I was the advanced resident for my program, currently a CA-2. Almost all advanced programs start July 1st considering your previous contract technically is not over until June 30th. I shadowed one of the seniors July 1st annnd July 2nd I was in my own room.... Honestly it wasn't too much of a problem. The learning curve during the first couple weeks and months will be really steep. If you don't feel like you're in over your head during the first couple months, your program probably isn't working you hard enough, that's totally normal.
The categorical residents at my program basically had an anesthesia boot camp for 3 weeks prior to July 1st. After about the first 3 or 4 weeks I'd say I was caught up to where they were. I would highly recommend going over the Stanford anesthesia CA-1 guide, it was really helpful in terms of covering the basics.

Once you start I would definitely suggest getting the M5 question bank and baby blue review. Using those I was able to bang out a 95% percentile on my CA-1 ITE, hope this helps.
