The advanced program I matched into strongly recommended a preliminary year, but I matched into a TY (which I'm really happy with!). Is this ever a problem? I interviewed at and ranked several prelims but didn't get them, so it wasn't like I ignored their advice...

Just wondering if this is ever an issue, and if so, how to handle it.

You're matched, and there's nothing you or they can do about it.

The only problem is that if you show up on day #1 of your Advanced program and don't perform well, the excuse "well my TY wasn't very serious about my education and that's why I'm behind my peers" won't fly.

So, I think my advice is to take your education during your TY seriously. Perhaps your TY is one of thise cush "10-3 with an hour for lunch" programs I keep hearing about (and not quite certain I believe exist). If so, you should be working much more than that, gaining as much experience as possible.

APD, sounds like 95% of path programs. Just kidding! not really. Since I used to see those guys at lunch for 2 hours every day when I was a medical student. I would have lunch and then go back to get my residents lunch and they would still be there.

This is just what I've seen from doing a path rotation but you're probably just seeing the path residents on lab rotation (because the machines do infact work themselves.)

You don't see their version of 'scutwork,' grossing surgical specimens. Everyday, the path residents on grossing duties are usually the last residents to leave the hospital ranging from 7 to 10 at night depending on their speed.

APD, thanks for your response. No, it's not a cush TY - there are just as many rigorous inpatient months as most prelims. And the last thing I want to do is show up on Day 1 of my advanced program and be unprepared and make an excuse about my TY being cush. I'd hate to be behind my peers when I start my advanced program and I'm going to work hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

The problem is that I have a feeling I'm going to have to explain my PGY-1 match to my advanced program, and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot with them. It's a shame because I was really excited about both my matches, but I've been worried about this since I matched. If they have concerns, should I put them in touch with the PD at the TY program? Or should I just explain what the curriculum is like?

Thanks again for your advice.

If your PGY1 year fulfills whatever requirements your advanced program has, and you perform adequately there, forget about it. You'll be fine.

Totally agree. Learn basic skills suring your TY. Go to your advanced program and do well. No one will ever care. You're making this into a bigger deal than it is.

Hi aPD, how do we PM you? I would like to ask you a question via PM but can't seem to do so.
