does anyone know how big of an advantage it is to have connections with a well known professor, program director, or chairman? People at my school try to get into doing research with them leaving the rest of us to work for others. It isn't fair if those students get an edge because they were lucky to get in with the top people. Can anyone give examples where there is favoritism involved? If this is specialty dependent then what specialties would be affected? Uggh...I hate the politics of med school!

lots of back door deals when it comes to resident selection, especially the small specialties.

It's life. The chair in one of the departments at my school is so well respected and well known that 4th years have said that if you do research with the guy and get his LOR, you can pretty much write your way into any residency program you want (in one of the most competitive specialties). Dont know if this is actually true or not, but I wouldnt be surprised if it is
