Hey all, I was just wondering, are any of you gonna be doing research or an honors thesis while in medical school? Are there any advantages to this? It just seems like more work on an already packed schedule. Is this just for people who want the personal satisfaction that they learned something above and beyond what they had to? Or is this strictly resume padding for residency?

I'm planing on working towards research honors. I am actually startting on a project at my school this summer before I even start first year. Depending on how it goes, I'll either go back to it or a project I started in undergrad next summer, and we are allowed to do some research during our 2nd year if our grades don't suffer. I'm doing it partly for myself (I was that kid determined to graduate from college Summa Cum Laude because I knew I could), but lso because I considered doing MD/PhD and decided against it, hoping that if I did research in med school and perhaps a research fellowship at some point post-graduation, I would establish myself enough that having research as part of my career wouldn't be inaccessible to me. Plus, I will always have a soft spot for the basic sciences...I love lectures and lab meetings!
