I am considering applying to med school a year or two after graduation. I will be a senior in biomed engineering next year and took the MCAT in April. Any suggestions on places to look at? I have a 3.33 and a 37P. I know my GPA kinda sucks but I am wondering where are some places to look at that I have a decent chance of getting in. Any help is appreciated as I am pretty ignorant as of now. Also, what do you put into your personal statement? I haven't really been able to find a good site with advice about that.

if I were you, I would do some searches on these boards because they have talked on this subject alot. I guess you could put in the search box "medical school statistics" or something along that line. you could also just check each forum like pre-allo, pre-osteo, etc. and look at what each thread is about. this is how I became familiar with the different topics being discussed. hope this helps! 😉

more importantly, you should ask yourself what year you're going to apply. 04-05 or 05-06

Wrong time and place to ask this question. Use the MCAT forum.

With a 37, your GPA does not kinda suck. I would apply to your state schools, a bunch of good med schools, and a handful of top-ranked programs. Assuming that you don't completely derail in your interviews you should, get into a few schools.

I'm also in kind of a funk because I haven't really been "collecting" professors to write LORs. Most of my engineering classes have been big, and the profs I do know personally are from other classes like spanish and composition courses. I've heard you need 5-6 LOR; what kind of profs do they want? All science? Mostly non-science? Where did you all get your LORs from?

I needed 3 LOR, and at least 2 had to come from my college (basic sciences). So I got biology, astronomy, and Latin prof to write mine.

On a side note, don't sweat the gpa too much - you have a stellar MCAT

i actually do have a question on the LOR's. my committee requires that we have at least 3 and explains that along with the committee letter will only be based on the 3 LOR's. but if we have more than 3 LOR's on file, will those be sent when secondaries require them even though the recs are not included in the committee letter (if this is indeed the case, i wish i'd know about it earlier b/c i could have asked a couple of professors from this past semester to write a couple of stellar recs)? this is so annoying...

Were those profs ones that you had the year you applied or were they from earlier in college? See I guess I'm just trying to figure out how much of my time I will have to spend gladhanding my profs and looking like a complete tool going to office hours every session. Even the profs I did go to office hours for when I had them last year I doubt will remember me in January or whatever when I ask them. January is a good time to ask I'm hearing??
