pardon my spelling
My names paul and im about 2 b a junior in high school. My parents (both born in kenya and 1 whose a r.n.) are really big into getting a good education. i originally wanted to venture into computers but seeing that im not indian, i didnt think it'd work out. (jk i jst dont think its a stable area). so ive decided to become a doctor. i havent picked which area exactly because i dont have all my info yet. i'd love to do something that would involve me in sports like sport medicine...if thats even a field, or something that would involve me in cutting edge technology and medicine @ the same time. anyways my question:
im number 28 outta 672 people in my class with a 4.0+ gpa. i got a 1100 on my psat at the beginning of my sophmore year and im taking it again on 10-16 so it will hopefully improve. i live in texas. i plan on volunteering @ a hospital soon. all my classes are a.p. except spanish and varsity football. i've always wanted to go to U.T. Austin but seeing that they dont have a med program ive been looking @ u of houston. is there anyway i could do my prerequisites at U.T. and then go to U of H? What kind of courses do yall recommend i take in high school? are my grades good enough or do only the valedictorians become the doctors? do yall recommend any websites? thanks for the help.

You can definitely become a doctor. You don't have to be the smartest person in your school. Most of the evaluation to get into medical school will be based on what you do while in college. So when you get there, study hard and get a high GPA and MCAT with clinical experience and research and you'll do fine in the application process. I don't mean just focus on things that will prepare you to get into medical school while in college because there's more to college life than strictly being pre-med. So for now I say you're in good shape in getting into a good college so enjoy your high school life while it lasts. BTW, here's a good website that I found helpful for pre-meds:

http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~knauft/resources/index.html

Good luck. 😀

dont worry about med school. after you get into college, you'll figure it out.

...and to think you haven't even experienced the college admissions process! Baby steps. It's fun to think about the big picture and plan the next decade or two of your life, but it's important to focus on the present.

Everything will fall into place. Just keep doing well grade-wise, and live life. Use the Search function (especially Advanced Search).

I actually was really interested in medicine when I was a kid, then when I discovered computers (got my first one in 7th grade...way behind my friends), I found a new passion. When I got to college I kept my mind open to new things, and while I still enjoy computers, I don't want to make a career out of either software coding or engineering complicated hardware. There's still plenty of technology in medicine though, don't worry about it at this point!

Remember, baby steps. 🙂

you are right, ut austin does not have a med school. but the ut system has four.......one in houston, galveston, dallas, and san antonio. u of h also does not have a med school, you may be thinking of ut houston. if you want to go to texas, go there. it is an awsome school and you will have no trouble getting into med school, as long as you keep up your end of the deal. as a texas-ex, i can assure you that you will not regret your decision to go there.....it was the best time of my life. hook 'em horns!! ou sucks (you'll learn all about that later....hehe) :horns:

Wow, I'm always amazed by the number of high schoolers who are planning this far ahead. When I was in high school, I had no idea what career i wanted to do.

In any case, good luck to the OP - but you have tons of time.
