DO NOT APPLY FROM UTAH!!!

The competition coming out of this state is ridigulous. If I had to do it over again, I would have or should have moved to another state like Mississippi or something and done my undergrad there and I would have just walked into their dental school. But coming from Utah, you are competing against such a huge number and undoubtedly some of the best stats in the nation.

Again, if I had to do it over again, I should have just picked a state where they just accept instaters and just done my undergrad there and applied to that dental school. Granted there are more ideal states to move to where this scenario would work out better than others, but you get my point.

JUST GET OUT OF UTAH WHILE YOU STILL CAN.

I have tons of friends applying up to three times and finally are having to move to Las Vegas to get resideny hoping to get in to UNLV as residents. They should have done this from the beginning. That's all I'm saying. And if not Las Vegas, somewhere else it doesn't matter. Too many people here are just finding out the hard way that applying from Utah equates to some pretty sucky chances of getting accepted to as many places as they should if they weren't applying from here.

This is just my own personal advice. It doesn't mean it's right though.

I do realize that there are plenty of good reasons for applying from Utah schools due to maybe better reputations, but I just think that due to the sheer quantity of applicants coming from here that schools just can't take us all and hence, a lot of good applicants are left hung out to dry.

I think this is first-rate advice, regardless of whether you are applying to dental school or not.

Ya, and they want to give us a dental school. Like we need more dentists.

I say quit moving to utah. if your from somewhere else don't come to BYU for your undergrad, it does suck. right now there are more people accepted to dental school from BYU than there are to medical school. With a 20 on the DAT and a 3.5 gpa i still haven't been accepted (granted I am only in my third year of undergrad). And one more thing if you're not from Utah don't practice here, I don't care if you married someone from Utah. Wow I feel better.

Nahh, just face it. Joseph Smith picked a crappy state to set up camp for his cult....err, religion. He could have always come to Texas, though he probably would have been lynch mobbed.

Wouldn't it be cool if we all got together and posted negative and ignorant things about Mormons? I say lets do it and make this whole thread degenerate into an orgy of ignorant religious commentary like the ones that were shut down before! Yeah!!
Many of the early LDS pioneers WERE "lynch mobbed," and you should be ashamed of yourself for making light of that kind of abuse or dedication, regardless of your opinion on the faith itself. Shame on you. I hope you don't tell me to lighten up either, because what you said was really insensitive.

But to the OP, I couldn't agree more. Totally sound advice. I applied as a CA resident but UOP still considered me a UT applicant since I went to BYU, which completely made me less competitive with my 22 DAT and 3.5 GPA. In fact, I didn't even get an interview from them.

As for BYU totally sucking in and of itself I disagree. Sure there were times when I wished I had gone to Berkeley or some leftist institution just because I was tired of the homogeneity of conservative thought in Provo, but I DECIDED to like it. Living in Happy Valley is a wierd experience, sure, but the funniest thing about it is how so many Utahns (yes, Utardism is real) feel the bubble effect, then get apologetic and hyper-critical of the state because they feel that the rest of the world is looking on from a bigger, better world shaking their heads. Then, because the demographic is so similar in terms of race and religion, people begin to rebel against the common identity to gain a sense of individuality, seeking the approval of the disapproving "outside world." Provo is a great place to go to school, it just depends on what you want. There are definitely negatives to going to school in Utah like how white the population is and how UNdiverse it is in terms of religion and how much harder it makes it to actually get accepted into dental school, but I wish Utah critics would pull their heads out of their negative stupor and see how wonderful it is. Gorgeous mountains, best skiing and snow SKIING magazing), great backpacking in the Uintahs, Wasatch and several desert areas, strong academic programs at BYU and the U, a pretty decent Indie and alternative rock scene, and people who in spite of their sometimes narrow universes are generally good and honest. What's so bad about that? Not that I'm going to live there ever again...just tired of the criticism.

So, anyway, I totally agree with the OP, if you want to improve your chances for acceptance to D-school, an out of UT residency would set you apart on your application from a boatload of other applicants... 😀

That comment does well to prove how ignorant you actually are. If you can't figure out why, then that just goes further to prove the point. Thanks for painting a nice picture for everybody.
