I know I shouldn't get too ahead of myself as a pre-med who's just now applying, but I was hoping I could get some advice about how to make the most out of an opportunity I have this summer and maybe make some connections that I may thank myself for later. I'll be doing research under a dermatology professor at a program that seems to be a leader in derm. There are so many specialties I'm interested in, but dermatology is definitely on my mind because I've had so many personal experiences with skin and hair conditions particularly relevant to my ethnic group. I'm excited to actually be a part of the research now!

So my question is... How can I leave a great impression on the faculty? Should I try to learn as much as I can about the faculty's research before starting? Is it appropriate for me to try to shadow other faculty in the department?

I really appreciate any guidance!

Work hard, definitely learn as much about the faculty's research as you can before starting. You can certainly shadow a day or two to see if you like it but I wouldn't go overboard. I think doing some derm research as a pre-med is a good way to introduce yourself to the field. I don't think it will end up doing much for your chances of matching so I would say work hard, have fun, and don't go overboard this early in the game. Good luck!
