We're going to be starting our Biochem block in the coming days (a very welcomed break from anatomy!)

For those who have survived this portion of 1st year already, what materials/resources did you find invaluable?

Any animated interactive learning resources? Etc. etc.

Memorize everything but actually understand what you're memorizing. Knowing the names of enzymes and stuff like that will probably be enough to pass but chances are, you won't remember much a few weeks after the test.

lipincott's illustrated review is pretty good. unfortunately biochem is one of the poorer taught subjects in medical school because of the poor integration of clinical material by professors who are hardcore biochemists. later on as you learn path you get some "ahh" moments where you get why you actually have to know biochem.

I second Lippincott's if you've never had a biochem background. IMO it isn't bad though. I feel that you can get by on knowing major concepts to figure things out. Then know any exceptions along with any details that are explicitly stated as important due to its clinical relevance.

gunner training has a great set of biochem flashcards. Read the recommended textbook if you've never taken biochem.

And unless you have amazing biochem teachers, I wouldn't even bother showing up for lecture, maybe not even reading their notes. The lack of enthusiasm and pointlessness of being present at the lectures should be obvious the first day of class.

If you try rote memorization of the course material you'll drive yourself nuts and be screwed for biochem on step 1.

biochem is extremely low yield for boards in case u were wondering. don't memorize every step of every pathway just know the rate limiting steps and any enzyme that can be regulated. try and put a clinical context around it.. some of it u can't its impossible. its dry and its boring but thats the best advice i can give u. dont sweat it though esp if ur at a P/F school bc i wayyy overstudied for biochem for boards bc it was one of my weaker subjects and i had maybe a couple "true" biochem questions everything else that even smelt like biochem was clinical and was discussed in pathology or elsewhere.

My biochem guy would give us a disease or symptoms and then ask us what pathway was defective. I wish we had more straight name the enzyme type questions.
