Hi, I'm Canadian and applying to US schools. Here's my stats and tentative list of schools, I would really appreciate any input or insight any of you guys have on my chances at these schools. Thank you.

GPA: 3.6
Sci GPA: 3.55
DAT: 20/20/20

I've done some volunteer, did one summer of research and worked in a lab for a prof during 2 school years. But I have no shadowing experience!!! :scared: That's my biggest concern right now. I plan to do some shadowing now but probably not before my application goes out. 🙁

U of Louisville
Harvard (just for the heck of it 😛 )
Boston University
U of Detroit Mercy
U of Michigan
NYU
SUNY @ Buffalo (first choice)
U of Pitts
Temple
Columbia

Thank in advance once again!!

Jakkini,

Im sure that others on SDN will agree with me when I say I think you have nothing to worry about regarding your GPA and DAT. However, you should definately do some shadowing, and since this wont be shown on your application, you should update the Adcoms that you sent your application to periodically so that they are aware that you are doing some shadowing.

Other than that, you seem to have a good bunch of schools there, of which Im sure you'll be interviewing at atleast a few. But for arguments sake you could add:

NOVA
Tufts
Case
PENN

just to name a few

Hey, you have great stats..why don't you apply in Canada?

VancouverDoc2b, thank you for your input!

EHA DDS, yes I do plan to apply to most Canadian schools as well. Although some schools look at only the best 2-3 years which would bring up my GPA somewhat to be more competitive in Canada, I'm not very confident about these schools. So I want to make sure I maximize my chances at the US schools as well.

Good idea, cause in Ontario, they cut the number of seats, so this year, people with 3.9s were getting waitlisted in Ontario, so you probably have no hope in Canada, but its worth a try! Anyways, your GPA is really good for US schools and will get into all of them (minus Harvard though)

Good Luck

most schools in canada take your last year and one more year to form your GPA, that combined with your DAT you may have a decent chance of getting into a Canadian school, although i dont know which Canadian schools you would want to go to other than Mcgill, UWO, UoT, or UBC

I'd take UofA over UBC any day, for 3 reasons: UofA has a much better rep in dental education than BC, UBCs clinical program sucks balls, and UBC is the most expensive dental program in the country.

But Van is a much nicer place to spend 4 years rather than edmonton (or for that matter, calgary, toronto, ottawa, winnipeg, yellowknife, etc etc....).

McGill (my undergrad) has very crappy facilities..their anatomy facilities are like 100 years old. As well, they are completely integrated with the medical schhool for the first yearand a half because their faculty almost went bankrupt!

UofT is a decent school but very competitive and $$

Sorry i dont think that i was clear when i made the list of those schools, i meant those would only be the one would want to attend because all of the other schools in Canada are not in favourable locations ie UofA.
Dalhousie may be one to add to the list

Edmonton isn't that bad, I'm actually going up there today. I'd still pick UofA over UBC, and McGill too (from what eha said), regardless of where the school is.

I'm currently at mcgill dentistry and I agree that the dentistry building is ancient and outdated. however the clinic is where the action takes place and from what i've seen, the facilities there at the MGH is quite new and better than UBC's current clinic. And since you buy your own instruments rather than renting them for astronomical fees like in some other school, you'll be working with new instruments anyway. Overall, I think mcgill is a real bargain since I'll be paying less than 40k CND or less than 30K USD for my DMD (excluding instrument purchase which is about another 20-25K CND).

I'm from toronto and got accepted to Harvard with a lower GPA than the OP. Mind you, my DAT scores were much, much higher. Also, I was heavily involved in research (with pubs), student government, etc. If you think you might want to go to harvard, you should certainly apply - I never in a million years thought I would be accepted. Don't let anyone tell you that you won't get in. I think awesome schools like harvard can forgive one poor part of an application (GPA for me) if you shine really bright in other respects.

Just to update a few of you incase u didnt know, UBC is going to have a brand new clinic built by the end of 2005 (I believe, but definately within the next 2 years) And to agree with Bickle, Vancouver is by far the best city in Canada.
