Hello,
I need some sound advice for applying to mph programs or schools. I graduated from the University of Georgia with a 2.88 GPA (partied a bit too much), but managed a 750q, 590v, and 4 on writing for my GRE. I worked at a clinical lab for 2 years. I think I am more focused for graduate studies and better informed about graduate program choices because of the work, and so I have decided to try for an MPH program.
My question is: what schools or programs (preferably in the East Coast or in California) should I realistically aim for based on my credentials?
Your stats are similar to mine (actually my stats are slightly lower than yours) so to give you a point of reference here is my info.
I got into Tulane for maternal/child health despite a low undergrad GPA and applying very late (end of June). I graduated from a public university on the East Coast in 2004 with a 2.85 undergrad GPA. I scored 700q, 560v, and 4.5 in writing on my GRE. Last year I decided I wanted to go to grad school. So, to prove that I was academically capable, I took a couple of graduate level classes at the local public university and got straight A's. I've been employed at the Louisiana Dept of Health working with children and adolescents and before that I worked at a non-profit substance abuse rehab center in New Orleans. Also, I went to New Orleans right after Katrina to work on relief efforts and I've been here ever since. That probably worked in my favor too, considering Tulane is in New Orleans and the profs are very passionate about rebuilding the city.
I thought for sure that I wouldn't get in because of my dismal undergrad GPA since most schools require at least a 3.0. Sure, Tulane is no Harvard or JH but it still has a very solid reputation. Plus, I also applied MUCH later than most people. Therefore, I was pessimistic about my chances.
If you're worried about your grades you could consider taking some classes at a local public university to prove that you're capable of handling graduate work. I would also work on writing a really good essay and getting some good recommendations of course. You could talk about your work experience in your essay and emphasize what you've learned from it and why you'd be a good grad student because of that. Your work experience will definitely look good
👍 and your GRE scores are well above average.
👍
Since you're stats are higher than mine and you also have good work experience I'm sure you'll be able to get into a solid program/school. You probably won't get into Harvard but I'm sure you could get into a solid, reputable school like GW, BU, UCLA, or Berkeley. Hope that helps. Good luck.
