Hello All,

I just wanted some insight on what I should be doing to enhance my chances of getting into dental school and becoming a better candidate....

I am currently about to finish my 2nd year in undergrad at a top 50 University, and I am a microbiology major. As of now, I have an overall GPA of 3.67 and a science GPA of 3.92 (Gen Chem I and II with lab, Biology I with lab, Organic Chem I with lab, and Calculus). I am finishing up Organic Chem II with lab and Biology II with lab this semester and should end up with a 3.8 for this semester. I will have all my pre-reqs done for the DAT as of May. I am in pre-dental club and shadowed my dentist for 50 hours this past summer. I will be taking all of the upper level science courses for the next two years while finishing up undergrad.

I would just like some advice on what areas I should focus on to improve my chances of getting into dental school (DAT tips, extracurriculars, LOR's etc), and what (and when) I should be doing as an upcoming 3rd year to build/improve my candidacy. Any adivce is highly appreciated.

Thanks!

Just make sure your DAT score matches your 3.7 overall and 3.9 science gpa.
Also, there is obviously some classes pulling your overall gpa down...might want to fix that.

good luck

Just maintain and do average on the DATs. You don't even have to do that great. Keep it around an 18 or so and you should be fine. One of the most important things is make sure to APPLY EARLY. Too many times people don't get accepted because they applyed late and significantly harmed their chances of getting admitted.

Good advice about applying early. However, the average GPA for matriculants is 19.. you really shouldn't get below that if you're trying to matriculate into a dental school.. sure there are people that get in with 18's but they are the exception.. you should feel pretty safe with a 19+.
