Hi there

I applied this year to MSSM and got waitlisted. Now it seems the chance is very small (I'm still waiting) so I am considering re-app next year. I would appreciate it very much for any advice to improve my app

My stats are below:
Foreign transcript from Singapore as undergrad, i am international as well
Undergrad GPA:3.78
MCAT: Verb 8, Phy 14, Bio 15, Q.
volunteering work (medical, community),
clinical shadowing,
2nd author of research paper in journal of clinical investigation
currently working as RA in immunology lab.

Anything I should improve? Thanks so much.

As an international student, you need to apply to ALOT of schools to have a chance. It is extremely hard for internationals to get accepted into a US MD.

Also, you might be weak in the ECs. Will need you to list them out in more detail.

Numbers wise you look fine....the verbal is a little low but it is still okay since it is an 8 and English is probably your second language.

I would get a MSAR and find schools that are international friendly.

Hey J DUB
Thanks for replying. I have listed my ECs below and hope you can see what i need to do more... Big thanks

Volunteer at a children's hospital during two summers,
Volunteer with Red Cross for half a year (ongoing)
First Aid and cardiac support trained with license
Brief clinical shadowing in a hospital under General Surgery

Other ECs include:
Drama Group and paintings....

I haven't applied to many schools because they don't look at students with only foreign transcripts. 🙄 And I don't know how friendly they are with re-applicants....?

Hey OP, your clinical ECs look good but what do you have in terms of other community involvements?

Also, I agree that your biggest challenge is going to be your non-canadian international status. Look into as many privates as possible, apply broadly (since your verbal might not make the MCAT cut-off for some schools - but your other section scores are intimidatingly good!)

When you put art as an EC, don't just list what you did! Send in a portfolio.

Hey, thanks for the reply! 🙂

My volunteering with Red Cross is mainly community service, such as blood donation drive or go to hospices. Currently I am still on the waitlist of one school, do you think if I should send them my porfolio? I have never done this. 🙄

And I hate to say this but my verbal was really bad....

At this stage, i don't know if i should further my community services or retake the mcat... but i know i definitely want to improve my app porfolio
