Hey I have been reading this forum for a while but have never posted anything, and now I'm really confused and need some advice...

I am a freshman at a community college and was planning on majoring in biology to do the whole pre-dental thing. After talking to my counselor, I was really shocked to hear that in order to transfer and fulfill the major requirements I should plan on staying at the cc for 3 years. This is only because she strongly urged me to not pile on the workload and risk getting a lower gpa. A lot of the people in this forum have said that they do not recommend taking any pre-reqs at a cc and wait until you transfer. Now I am wondering should I consider majoring in something else (psychology), in which I do not mind, and transfer to a 4yr university and then take my dental pre-reqs there? I figure this way I will study something I am interested in, but I just do not know if I am suppose to take my science classes after I transfer or now in order to still do pre-dental.

Thanks! I really appreciate any advice.

Well... you can do that, but it will take you a lot longer than needed. Why don't you get the minimum amount of credits to transfer to a 4 year institution and finish everything in 4 years?
You can major in anything... but just make sure you dont do too many of the pre-reqs at a CC, some dental schools don't accept CC pre-reqs at all, so think about that.
Don't stay in undergraduate for more than 4 years, thats my advice... You have another 4 years to go... that's without residency/specialty.

Good luck 😛

i know people who took the majority of their pre reqs at a CC. when they got into the university after 2 years they took a bunch of upper division science classes to show the dental school they can handle science classes at a university level.

If there is a 4 year university that you would like to attend, either search on their website or call for the web address, but there are some classes that transfer over to 4 yr colleges from you cc and some that don't.

You don't have to major in anything at your cc, I took 77 credit at my cc and never got a degree. That is until I transfered to a 4 yr school and finished there.

what type of classes did you take at the community college?

Im in a community college right now. Im taking bio1 now, probably going to take bio2 and probably chem 1 during summer. Im trying to finish 30 credits as fast as possible so I can transfer to VCU!!! 😛

IMO do 2 years CC, transfer, take 2-4 classes in summer and your set. apply your 3rd year and finish in 4. Most dental schools limit the CC credit you can do.

Tufts won't take JC courses at all for their pre-reqs....just so you know.
