Dear users,

I have a 9 year old miniature pincher named Abby. Here is my current situation.

Abby is incontinent and has been for 2 years or so now. We believe it is something neurological that can not be fixed. The next step the vet recommended is some type of surgery that I as a college student can not afford especially when it is not guaranteed to fix anything. She currently wears a diaper all day that often fall off. If we take her outside to use the bathroom, she will go but 10 minutes later will go again inside. She pees and poops non stop at any point. This is become a hassle and huge stress on my sister and her husband who are currently raising 3 dogs and a 2 year old child. I feel it is unfair for me to make them deal with this situation when im away at school.

However, I have no one else able to take her. I do not see her problem ever getting fixed and I know my sister can not raise her while I am gone. Is it wrong that I am possibly thinking of having her put to sleep? I have no way of caring for her and I can't think of any possible scenario for someone to take care of her. She also currently has slight trouble walking. She is unable to go up the stairs and can go down some slowly. She has seemed to have lost some of her strength. It kills me to even think of doing this but i really don't know what to do. I love my dog but I also love my family.

Has anyone ever been in a similar situation?
Can anyone throw some advice my way to help me deal with this?

Any help would be appreciated.

No, it's not wrong to consider euthanasia. If it is not realistically possible to provide her with a happy, comfortable life then a peaceful death is the best option. Your obligation is to do the best *you* can do, not the best that is theoretically possible in a perfect world. You can make whatever decision is the best for all involved, whatever that decision may be.

It's a tough position to be in, I know. Best wishes to you.

If it's not realistic to take care of her yourself or have family members take care of her, would you consider talking to a Miniature Pinscher rescue group to see if they could rehome her?

SDN is not for patient consultation or advice. It is for discussion of issues amongst students and practitioners. Closing this thread.
