I am not sure where I should post this so I thought I'd post it here. I'm in a combined BS/MD program with BS in bioengineer. I'm applying for the year 2012. Unfortunately, the program is binding which means I will have to forfeit my seat at this med school if I apply elsewhere. Here are my stats:

Major: Bioengineering
Minor: Chemistry
GPA: 3.96
Have 6 publications. Have 3 co-ops at various places.
Involved in: TBP, WISE, SWE, Red Cross, Tennis, Engineering Leadership Institute...
MCAT: taking it Aug 6 for the first time. I know it's late but I didn't know any better and by the time I did, I've already signed up and all seats have been filled. I honestly have no idea how well I'd score on it but I'm shooting for a 42 🙂meanie🙂...it is the meaning of life after all...

So all jokes aside, do you think I should burn my bridge and just submit my AMCAS application or wait for my MCAT score as I originally plan to do. My dream schools are: Stanford or Yale. But my undergrad isn't a big name school...I gave up the prestige for security and I'm now trying to throw the security away-in a way...haha

I appreciate all your advices!!! Thank you!

I'm a newbie to all this. However, i must say your stats look really good. If I were you, I would wait for my MCAT score. aaaaaaand if its bangn press the submit button immediately... this way if it doesn't turn out to be what you wanted (a 42, lol) you will always have your reserved seat with no hard feelings from your program. I think you definitely have a really great chance at your dream schools with your kick ass gpa and publications. also you would be a really awesome applicant with some physician shadowing or hospital volunteering if you haven't already.

I wouldn't move away from the MD spot you already have, but realistically, you'll get in somewhere else if you decide to apply. I project your chance at acceptance at 93% at 3.96 and anywhere above a 38 MCAT. Dropping down to a 34 and you're still at 87%. Here are opinions about applying out of a BS/MD program http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=832913

Anyway, your possibilities at Stanford and Yale are very dependent on your EC's. You've got the stats for them. But more information about your time length for your various EC's can help. It sounds like your research is definitely what they're looking for.

I'd normally say "definitely don't apply out of the program" but your stats make an acceptance a virtual lock. It would be interesting to see if schools will have a bias against you if they find out that you were in a BS/MD program though. That might be a risk worth considering.

I would wait for your MCAT score to see how you did, but that puts you pretty late and in a long line for verification.

Thank you both for the advice. I appreciate it! It definitely makes me feel better since I've always been told how dismal the chances are at getting into med school...haha...42, 42, 42 ... Haha so if I keep telling myself I can get it, Life will give it to me won't it? 😉
Thank you both again!

Nah, I'm shooting for the meaning of life. Can't get any higher than that! Haha...
