I recently attended an interview at a mid tier university program .

However though i am an IMG , i attended graduate school at a prestigious university in the United States and was
also able to get a letter of recommendation from one of the directors of a fellowship program in my specialty.

The thing is during my interview at this mid-tier program i was asked directly about whether i had an interview at this prestigious program and although i felt uncomfortable answering the question, i responded that though i do have an interview there , i would love to come to their program and outlined reasons why.

The worry i have is that i really really want to go to this mid tier program and i am worried that because i told the truth they may take it that i wouldn't rank them or that i had no interest in them.

How do i show them this isn't the case? I know they werent supposed to ask me this question and its a match violation, but i think the individual who did so wasn't very experienced and simply asked out of curiousity.
Everyone's thoughts on how i can go about this are fully appreciated.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it. They know that plenty of people interview at more prestigous places and choose somewhere less prestigous all the time. They also know that even if you rank a program higher than theirs, it doesn't mean you're going to match there.

You already pointed out in your interview why you want to come to their program (even with the other interview). If this is your clear number 1, tell them that. If not, try to relax!

It does a program absolutely no good to rank applicants based on "Where else did they interview" or "They're likely to match somewhere else." We rank based on our preferences for the applicants. You should submit your rank list based on where you prefer to go.
