Besides having high OAT scores and good grades, does anyone have any other advice that will increase my chances of being accepted?

Knowing the field and having some experience in it will help.

I agree. Definitely know what you're getting yourself into either by shadowing an optometrist or by any other means. Your panel of interviewers will be impressived if you can tie in personal experience with some of the questions that they ask.

When you shadow someone, how long do you usually do that for? Is it like a few months, a week, a day? I do know an optometrist pretty well that lives near me that I could shadow. Maybe I should do that as soon as possible.

I don't think the duration is as important as what you learn from the experience. Stay long enough to feel comfortable talking about the profession in front of a panel.
