Congratulations to the 4th years on matching!!!

I will be applying for Psych next year and I would like to end up in the nyc area. I am going to do an away elective this September to try it out. I was wondering if anyone had advice on good programs to go to, or places to avoid?

I really appreciate hearing about any of your experiences with these programs!

I did an away rotation at Columbia, and it was a fantastic experience. They invite sub-i's to attend PGY-2 classes, which was pretty cool. I had a lot of independence and primary responsibility in terms of patient care. They offer short term housing at their medical dorm at a very reasonable price. It's only a block from the hospital, which was super convenient, but the neighborhood kind of sucks. Overall, I was really pleased with my experience, and I'm glad I did it.

I had a friend who did a psych ER rotation at Cornell as a visiting student, and he had great things to say about that experience too.

Best of luck!

My rotation was on NYU's forensic unit. Absolutely loved it. My attending was awesome - Very thoughtful 🙄, very cool 😎, very funny 🙂 and very bright . Was obvious that he liked teaching and happy to have students on the unit. Attendings gave students a good amount of responsibility while still allowing for time to do things that you wouldn't get to do in other rotations -for example, for a patient that I was following I got to meet his lawyer and attend one of his trials in the Manhattan Court. There are no residents on the forensic unit unless they are doing an elective, so you get to act in some ways as residents which was nice. But you still get exposure to the program in that you also attend PGY-2 lectures so you can still get to know the residents and the general atmosphere of the program even if you're not working with them. Also attended supervision with my attending and a 3rd year resident, I liked that a lot b/c you get to see little bits of interaction between residents and attendings and sort of get a feel for what life is like for the residents. For housing I found a very nice sublet on Craig's list within walking distance of Bellevue, didn't have to take the subway every morning which was nice but it was pricey. For the experience I thought it was well worth it. 👍 Happy to answer any ? you've got em in the future. (Althought I matched at UCLA I actually applied to mostly NYC programs)
