Hi everyone,

I am seeking for advice or opinions, I am only a second year student and know that I will be going to be taking an extra year in college. I took Gen Chem already and got straight C's on sequence. I retook both Gen Chem I and II and got a C again (I know it's not bad and pathetic) but I currently transferred and the courses were very different so I ended up getting C on retakes for both I and II. I haven't taken any Organic Chem or upper division science until next year. I just need advice if taking Gen Chem for the third time would hurt me in the long run for my GPA or chances in getting into Medical school for MD.

Thank you

You might want to check with AACOMAS to see if a third re-take replaces both bad scores for DO. Your scores for MD will just be averaged and the larger the number of weak scores, the lower the gpa will be and the harder it will be to redeem it.

This would be a good time to see your academic counselors to identify the flaw(s) in your approach to the material and institute a plan of correction.

Do not re-take Gen Chem I or II. Instead, focus on doing better in your future science classes. Find a tutor or go to office hours if you need to in order to do well. You can, in certain instances, make up for a low GPA by doing well on the MCAT and having exceptional extracurricular activities.

A strong MCAT score does not really remediate a pattern of poor performance. They are measures of different qualities.

You have a point and I agree, though a third retake doesn't seem plausible either. Since OP is only a second year, he/she may still be able to increase their GPA in the following years to come. A post-bacc might be helpful as well.

Hi everyone,

Yes I have 3 more years in college to take all my pre reqs and get a better GPA but I'm always worried that a C would look bad unless I can retake it. Some people also have this struggle and some say it's okay to retake courses but some say it is not. So I'm kind of lost in what to do.

You need to learn to get A's...and soon.
Yes I do know that I need to step up my game in academics, so do you think just keep going and get straight A's in the coming years and ignore the C's in my Gen Chem courses?
