I was recently accepted to a PharmD. program and have not worked in a pharmacy where I've been paid. I've volunteered in a few places so I'm not completely ignorant, but I wanted to ask those who currently work in pharmacies and know about how hiring decisions are made, what's the best way to get in the door, how are schedules made, (so I will know when the best time to apply is, whether tomorrow or when the semester starts in Jan.) etc. what the best way to find a job is?

I realize this is somewhat of a subjective question and probably differs greatly across the country, but I'm sure there are many things that are constant and would be nice to know. So, if you know any of those things, sharing them with me would would be greatly appreciated.

First, get your intern license as soon as your state allows. Then contact the district managers for the various chains in your area and ask if they have any positions available. I don't know about the best time to apply, but the worst time to apply would be during the summer, especially at the beginning of the summer. This is when every other pharmacy student is out of school and willing to work full time, so there is a lot more cometition.

I agree about not applying during the beginning of the summer... at my store, all the college kids come back and we have tons of help! We usually need to hire people around mid-August because people are going back to school.

You should check with your Dean's Office, they might know about job openings. Ours sends out notifications once in a while from different employers around town. Also, check with your classmates, we exchange info about our various workplaces quite often.

approach those recuiters during luncheons that they offer your school. I got my jot that way and it is the most effective way.

I had never worked in a pharmacy when I started pharmacy school, I didn't even volunteer anywhere! I waited until I got my inter license (it took two months here in Nebraska) then I did the following things: 1) I spoke to P2's and P3's to see where they worked and if they were hiring, 2) I went to the SOP and they had a listing of openings and 3) Since I didnt want to do retail I spoke to my professors. They had contacts in different areas that interested me (i.e. PBM's, Hospital, Home health, Nuclear, etc).

IT is pretty easy since there is so much demand. Good Luck!

Here is what I did.

Internet was unheard of in 1991... There was this big yellow book called "The Yellow Pages"

I went under "Hospital" section and started to call them from A - Z.

I was using a line "Hello Sir/ma'am, I'm a P-1 and just received my intern license... I would like to work every weekend for you."

By the time I got to "C" I got hired on the phone. Childrens Hospital.
