Hi guys,

I'm filling out my TMDSAS and AMCAS and I need advice on which schools to apply to.
Obviously, all 8 Texas schools are a given (I'm a TX resident). But since I'm supposed to tell TMDSAS which other schools I'm applying to, I need to know pretty much now.
I have added a few top 10 schools as my reach schools, just because you never know (so don't start the commentaries on my stats/chances, since as far as I'm concerned, you never know). However, I was wondering if you guys had more suggestions, maybe out of state schools that are easy (-er) to get into, or more top schools suggestions.

So far, I've got Baylor College, Harvard, Yale, Duke and Columbia.

THANKS!!!!

Keep in mind Duke asks for a sh1t ton of secondary essays. You being URM kinda throws a wrench in the works and makes the list somewhat flexible. Your GPA is definitely lower than it should be (which yo'uve already mentioned) but like I said, that URM will go a long ways. Other than those top tiers and TX schools you could add a couple of safeties:
Rosalind
Drexel
Temple
NYMC

Maybe a few mid tiers:
NYU
BU
USC(Do you want to go to cali?)

If you can get a really good score on the mcat you could probably ride the URM straight into a toptier

Yeah, my gpa is lower, which i think I've addressed is due to my two chemistry classes (chem 1 & 2), both taken freshman year.
However, I do know that schools get to see my transcripts. I do hope they look at the 3.68 gpa on them. It might not count on paper, but it might help.

An upward trend helps. Although that C+ on orgoII hurts the overall slope of your GPA graph. Just hope your have good MCATs, itll offset most of that

Thanks for the list, those safety schools sound great. The list of schools is so big that I was having trouble finding any.
I hope to have offset the C+ with my A in biochem and A in organic lab. I'm trying not to rely on MCATs too much, in case I did horrible, although my practice scores were about average and always consistent (around 27 or 28), but I still thought the real one was hard. Anyway, I know my gpa is crap to a lot of people here, but there's more than numbers to the story. 😍

I think your 20K a year w/ the family is something you can mention during interviews and what not since theres no way it didn't affect you. Which practice tests were you using? I actually went up from my prac tests so you might get higher 🙂

I used AAMC. I've heard they're quite accurate, meaning practice score is usually actual score, with a ~3 pt margin....

Good list, I especially like Columbia. Perhaps you could consider Pittsburgh.

hey baylormed. i'm also a texas URM, and i'm actually doing the exact same thing you are. i REALLY want to go to med school in texas, so i'm applying to all the texas schools using TMDSAS and then to Baylor using the AMCAS. since i'd end up paying $40000 a year for any out-of-state school, i figured i might as well shoot for the top. here's my list so far.

Harvard
Duke (maybe, depending on how bad secondaries are)
Johns Hopkins
Columbia
Yale

I'm gonna add some more as soon as i finish skimming through the MSAR and i might make some changes when I get my MCAT score. if i don't get into these schools, it won't really bug me, but if i do, i'll be able to say i got into a crazy-good school.
But i really really really wanna get into baylor. 🙂
