I struggled alot over the years trying to make my dream of becoming a doctor possible. I was in college for 2 years majoring in biology had a 3.4 gpa but a 3.0 sgpa. I still have alot more classes to take like organic chem n physics etc. I decided to try RN after my mother convinced me it was a good idea. I did well the first semester but had alot going on the 2nd semester. I had health issues, found myself pregnant, miscarried, had a death in the family, brother was in Iraq etc. I ended up failing 4 classes 2 were nursing courses and the other two were pharm n patho. I really beat myself up because I have never failed anything before. After that I got my emt lisence and started working and doing that for 6 months, but i found myself with a back injury. I am back in college now and in a more stable situation. I know that I can retake pharm n patho but those nursing courses i cant repeat because I am no longer in the nursing program. Should I repeat what i can and just continue on the biology track or go back to nursing school and retake what i failed and then apply to DO? I wont be able to retake nursing fundamentals and health assessment unless I go back to nursing school otherwise they will show up in my gpa as 2 Fs. Not sure what to do? Any advice? I still havent taken the mcat yet so i still have a shot at that and i plan on volunteering and doing some shadowing as well.

Take O-chem, Physics and other pre-reqs. with a 3.7+ gpa and then come back and we'll be able to help you. No point retaking any class if you can't complete pre-reqs for med schools.

I will say that I don't think those nursing prereqs will count towards your sGPA so that's good, but they will count towards your cGPA. 2 F's (6 credit hours im assuming) on a total of 120 hours (assuming again) around a 3.5 and you will still be above a 3.0. I would focus on keeping your cGPA up the rest of your time in school. I don't think you closed the door to med school by any means.

Stay motivated work hard and be successful. Good luck.

Suggest skipping nursing school (there's a glut of nurses nationwide) and try an SMP. You need to show us AdCom members that you can handle the load of medical school.

STRONGLY suggest developing more coping skills too. You've had a lot of hits in your life, and I worry that something else will clobber you in med school.

^^ this is good advice.

No use looking for a SMP until you can get through Ochem/other prereqs and kill them.

Don't be too hard on yourself- wipe your slate clean, mentally, and just get in a place where you can start fresh and kick ass in school without the ghosts of your past weighing you down. Then go kill it in your science classes.

F's on your record never look good. Retake those and any C's you have, then focus like crazy and kill it on all your classes from here on out. Do especially well on your pre-reqs, as those really count (for your sGPA as well as for your MCAT). Everyone's got issues to deal with while in school, and ad-coms understand that. You've got a lot of wiggle room and there's plenty of hope!

THIS.

pre-reqs are the first major stepping stone. it makes no sense to put other ducks in a row if those are not present and accounted for.
