I got my step 1 back yesterday and was dissappointed not to have not at least hit the mean. I got a 228. Will I be setting myself up for failure in terms of not matching by trying for the best EM residencies?

There have been numerous posts on this, but I understand its hard to search by step 1/2 scores.
Scores matter, but only at certain locations, i.e. Denver, Cincinn., West Coast programs,.... If you're not picky on where to go, then work hard in 3rd year, get your letters, and rotate at a couple (2, maybe 3...) EM spots you may want. Take step 2 early and show the PD that step 1 was a fluke. Most PD just want to make sure that you can pass the tests, not ace it.

P.S. Try not to fail anything. That looks bad. Good Luck.

i'm only a medical student, but here's a study of "selection criteria" for EM residency programs.
