Hi Guys, I need your advice. I am finishing my CA1 by end of June. Iam in small hospital in Mid west. By the end of CA1year I got the feeling I am too mild and soft to finish anesthesia. 2 of my attendings who are quite influential clinical competence committee are picking me up for everything I do, since beginning. .But the other attendings gave me good evaluations including the program director. My AKT and Board scores are 84 percentile .Those two attendings say my knowledge is good but I get nervous sometimes.. When I said to PD he said initially it should not be a problem if it is just two attendings .But now he says he is not sure if they give any trouble in the middle of year. I told my Director I like anesthesia I want to continue .He said he also likes me but he cannot assure me that I wont have any problem. I spoke to few previous residents who graduates and attendings from dept. They told that it is unsafe too stay here as some people don’t train the residents they just expect to work like employees from day 1.and those two people are prejudiced against foreign candidates and you cannot survive against them.. The PD himself told me now its better to look some other program and he will give full credit and recommend me to other program. But I told him it is too late to look for some other programs. I got offer in one PMR residency program. I do not know whether to join or not .Are things like these happen in your depts.. Do you guys know any second year spositions in anesthesia.Any advice is appreciated.

I don't know if it is your typing or are you strugling with the english language. I am definitely not the most literate person here, but I am having a hard time reading your post. So with that being said, Are you strugling or not? If so do you think that the attendings are having a hard time understanding you? Opinions may have been formed and therefore, will be hard to change. I would look elsewhere for my own security but I wouldn't worry to much if I didn't find anything and had to finish my residency there. The reason I say this is that you may find it to be better for you somewhere else. But If it helps, I had a chinese surgeon in my residency class that nobody could understand and he is board certified now.
If I am way off then let me know but this is what I am getting from you.

So I gather you are unhappy where you are......Sooooo, what is your question?

Are you asking if you should quit?

Are you asking what your chances are to finish?

Buddy, maybe you just have ANXIETY.

Go see an internal medicine guy/FP dude and get checked out. Lexapro may save the day.

Thanks guys for your input.May be I am feeling nervous in continuing in that program.so I decided to to do Anesthesia in some other program but if I do not get that position I may join PMR.Guys let me know if you have any 2 nd year position in anesthesia in your program.Do you think is it possible to complete remaining 2 years of anesthesia after finishing PMR residency.Do the programs accept such residents .Is it ok with ABA.

I think you need to first decide which residency you want to do. Anesthesiology and PM&R are two very different fields and if you want to jump ship to PM&R, don't expect to be able to jump back without a lot of tough questions.

At this point, you would need a minor miracle to be able to get a spot for the upcoming year, barring injury/death/dropout of a resident at another program.

Contact any program you might be interested in, but don't expect a positive response at this point in time.
