When I got in my dad gave me a second hand copy of Harry Lorayne's Superpower Memory. You can get a PDF version of it for free from torrent sites if you can handle reading it all off a PC. It has some great systems for memorizing lists and other stuff, which I've already found helpful in my first semester.
I think it would be more helpful if I put some of the other ideas they suggest into practice more, such as drills for improving observational memory etc that I haven't used much.
Also, during the study period before first semester exams (too late to be of much use for this round, unfortunately!) I came across something called supermemo. Basically, it's a program that allows you to create your own library of quiz questions and then test yourself on them and self-mark whether you got them right. There's a free to use online version at supermemo.net, or you can download a freeware desktop version also at supermemo.com It's worth checking out.
If anyone has any other suggestions I'd be keen to hear them as I'm always after ways to learn/ study more effectively!
