I really liked the program and am considering ranking it higher than perhaps its (albeit subjective) reputation would warrant. Any comments? One concern I have is fellowship opportunities...

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks and good luck to fellow applicants!

I'm not sure it's reputation is as poor as you perceive. From what I hear it's an OUTSTANDING program that has an excellent faculty with a strong reputation.

Is it on par with Bascom-Palmer for reputation? I wouldnt say that...but very few programs really and TRULY are.

In short, residency is very difficult and you have to enjoy waking up and going to work in order to make the best of it. If you go somewhere you wouldnt like (based on the subjective reputation alone), then those will be a LONG 3 years...you wont be happy and you likely wont do as well as if you went elsewhere. If you go to a program you enjoy, you will do very well and the fellowship opportunities WILL exist...especially if you do well because you are happy. In the end, residency is what you make of it...

Agree with above.

UC Davis is an outstanding program. It provides the highest surgical numbers of any program in CA (250-300 cases what I have heard from former residents; this may have changed since they now have 4/year). Lots of subspeciality exposure (Mark Mannis is fantastic; you start doing parts of phaco in your first year). Call tends to be busy first year, but this has gotten better with 4 PGY-2s. You get lots of trauma on-call, etc.

All-in-all, I think this is one of the best clinical programs in the country.
