Background info:
Canadian student (currently in 3rd year)
Current GPA: 3.31 (not exactly good I know, but I have been improving as of recently, aka last semester)
Extra curriculars, shadowing, community service, leadership positions, research: quite strong
LORs: I think they should be quite good, especially ones from dentists (aka shadowing experiences)
DAT: AA(20), PAT(18, ouch i know), RC(20), Carving(22)

SO. I am eligible to apply this cycle (this coming June) and I want to know what people think my chances are? The reason why I want to know is because in order to apply I will have to take 1 organic chem course and 2 English courses in the summer. HOWEVER, I am also considering med school (so writing the MCAT this summer). I have shadowed both general dentists and doctors but I want to shadow some more doctors to see if I really am interested. I also want to write the MCAT so I can keep my options open. BUT I don't think I will be able to study for the MCAT and take 3 courses in the summer. Which means if I write the MCAT, I won't be able to apply to Dental school this year. SO, if my chances for dental school are low, I will study/write my MCAT this summer and apply for dental school next cycle. But if my chances are somewhat decent than I will reconsider writing the MCAT. Also, do you guys think it is manageable to study for the MCAT and take 3 courses (one of which being organic chem). I would say my time management is decent but to me that sounds pretty heavy. Thanks! (lots of feedback would be most appreciated)

For a Canadian, I think your chances are on the lower end.

Which school do you attend? because from what I hear you need like 4.0 at Canadian schools to get in.

Since you are an international you should bring your gpa to at least 3.5 or higher, and 20 is most likely not going to cut it for an international (although my canadian classmates got in with 20's but that was 4yrs ago) 21+ should give you a fighting chance with a 3.5.

MCAT is an entirely different beast, I would not be taking 3 courses in the summer while studying for that, its more of a full time job.

I go to the University of Guelph. Ok thanks for the advice. I also forgot to clarify that this is a what are my chances for getting into American schools. I was looking at some stats from 2009-2010 and the avg. GPA of ppl that got accepted into some schools (can't remember specifically) was around 3.3 (and these weren't state schools that primarily accept in state students). Are my chances still pretty low?

Yes because the majority of those students go to American universities. You have to have really good stats if you're Canadian and want to go to a American dental school. Like much better then average.
