Hey Members,

I actually just joined this site. I am currently a senior in High School. Dentistry is something I have been very interested in for a while now. I have already been admitted to the university I wanted. I was wanting to seek out advice on getting into Dental School and my journey though out college. If anyone has advice for me or any extracurricular activities I should start doing to expose myself to the dental world that would be much appreciated!!! GOOD LUCK to all who applied and are waiting acceptance.

I know shadowing wouldn't hurt!

Or classes you recommend taking

I believe I'm going to Major in Biology

Its never too late to start studying for the DAT! The higher the score the more schools you get accepted into! A high DAT score beats any EX activites anyday! 😉

You have chosen a good carrer 😛. There are several things that you need to do in order to be competitive for dental school;
1. Work hard, get the highest GPA possible in undergraduate.
2. Start shadowing a dentist as soon as possible. You can wait until your sophmore or junior year, but its always good to start early.
3. As far as classes, take the dental school pre-requesites (bio 1-2, chem 1-2, organic chem 1-2, physics 1-2) Different schools have their own list of pre-requesites, so make sure to check them and see what you need to take, and last thing... take a few upper level classes like cell biology, genetics, microbiology, bacteriology, immunology... These classes will make your transition from undergrad to dental school easier.
4. Take the DAT 1 year prior to applying to dental school. Make sure you study... this test is very important part of your application.
5. Now for extra curricular activities, there are so many options out there... volunteer at different clinics/hospitals, you can get involved with research, or join the pre-denal club (if your school has one)

Good luck and keep those grades up.

Do pretty much the same things an allopathic pre-med would do, except take the DAT and shadow some dentists.

Get to know your prehealth advisor early. Schedule an introductory appointment with him/her as soon as you get to college. Let him/her know of your intention to pursue dentistry. Major in anything that interests you don't worry if it's a nonscience major. Get to know the prehealth resources available at the school you are attending. Periodically meet your prehealth advisor/dean to make changes or tweaks to your plan as you go along. Also don't be afraid to contact admissions to dental schools that you become interest in if you have questions.

Try not to ditch classes!!!
