Hi!

I just finished first year med, and (yes, yes I know it's early to have decided) I know I want to anesthesia. I know it's a competitive specialty... what are they looking for? Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,
pdd

Anesthesia programs are looking for what every other specialty is looking for in students. A strong student both in the classroom and out. They want high board scores, good personality, and a genuine interest in the specialty. The most important thing that you can do at your stage of training is do well on Step 1. Everything else will fall into place after that.

This forum can be frustrating for students because most people that post here are close to finishing their training or are already practicing. They are generally impatient with basic, or student-type questions. Other forums aren't quite so "aged." Let me know if you have any other questions.

"...I want to anesthesia." Looks like ebonics has infiltrated the medical school curriculum perhaps I'll try it out next week on an elderly retiree... "Yo,yo,yo girly, girl, my namey be Dr. Zippy the Hippy and I be gonna anesthesia yo *ss, fo' shor', otay?, word..." Regards, ----Zip

gonna have to disagree. a good mix of folks on this forum...

but, the people on this forum have addressed that exact question to many times to count. Thus a great FAQ section was created that deals with the medical student questions. If someone reads the FAQ and still needs a pointer, I know for a fact it would be taken care of promptly. Problem here...the dude did not even bother looking over the forum before he posted his question.

Apologies since I'm new to the forum and didn't realize there were FAQs. Which I've since checked out and found helpful. Also I'll do my best not to make any more typos since I'd prefer if people didn't assume I was ESL.

P.S. Why assume I'm a dude?
