I am a non-trad student wanting to apply to vet school. It won't be for at least a year (more like 1.5-2 years) because I have to get all the science/math pre-reqs finished. But I've started the process of looking at schools that I might want to apply to when the time comes. I'm still not entirely sure of what I want to focus on, but am leaning towards shelter medicine and/or exotics (specifically aquatic, such as sharks, though I'm still thinking about that versus just exotics in general). None of the schools I've looked at have any information about the possibility of aquatics (but maybe I'm missing something). (I think I did read the Florida might do some stuff with aquatics, but I wasn't sure if it was just mammals). Are there any schools I should specifically be looking at (for either the shelter or exotics)? (BTW, my IS would be Penn but I'm not too sold on them yet. I was a CA resident and went to PA for school and changed residency while here, I don't know if that counts for anything).

Thanks.

The state in which you hold residency is the only state where you will be able to pay in-state (IS) tuition, which is traditionally a good deal cheaper than it is for non-residents(OOS). However, I don't think Penn's IS tuition is that much more affordable than OOS, so... it may not matter much in the long run. You should do some research about tuition for any schools you may be interested in, just to make sure you know what you're in for.

As for where to apply, here are some threads on aquatic/marine medicine:

Here is one thread about shelter medicine (hard to find threads devoted to only this):

And here is another thread about 'what schools are known for' complete with personal bias and probably an argument about such... but it'll give you some general ideas:

Hope that helps. 🙂

In CA's residency stuff, there is a line about if you went to high school in California. I've attached the residency form. There might be a more recent one online, but this is the one I have in my files.

Thanks for the link VAgirl! I didn't know that I could be exempt from nonresident status because of high school. I might have to add Davis to my list of possibilities now.

I guess I should've added to my original post that I'd like to find otu what schools have classes or programs on chondrichthyes particularly (not marine mammals). If anyone knows any that have programs it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks.
