  1. Pre-Optometry
Hi guys
I'm a 2nd year undergrad and I've recently decided I want to do optometry.
However, my grades are really bad from my first year.

Here's what I need advice on:
1. General Chem: C-,C,C (I think I have to take the C- over because most schools won't accept it)
-Do you guys think I should take the whole series over?

2. My overall GPA right now is 3.0 (2 quarters ago it was 2.7!)
My upper division GPA is 4.0 (so far..)
I feel like my GPA is too low.. 🙁 Any suggestions?

3. I'm junior standing and I think I will end up graduating early.
Which schools accept early admissions?
I only know that SCCO accepts early admissions.

4. Do any of you guys know much about Pacific University?

5. Also, what made YOU choose optometry??

THANKS IN ADVANCED!

i had low grades my first semester freshman year too,
no C-'s and the only Cs i had appeared in my first semester in college. I worked my butt off and showed an upwards trend and i think bc i showed improvement the schools did not look much into my first semester.

needless to say, if you work hard and show that you are improving you should have a good shot. but youd have to retake your C- though, no schools accept a prereq under a C.

About the schools, i really adored pacific. i love its program and it gave me a very good impression when i went. I did not accept their invitation though bc im from california where a small town has 200,000+ people, so i didnt think i could live in such a small town for 3 years. so it wasnt for me. who knows you may like it!

good luck!

I agree with the previous posts. I just accepted an offer for c/o 2104 from Pacific. It's a great place, though Forest Grove is a bit small. I'd be happy to share more info if you'd like. Just let me know.

I really like Pacific so far because they are so interactive and happy to answer any questions. I've always lived in a big city (hometown and moving away to college) but I'm planning to go visit!

I have decided that I'm going to take my time.. However, I did go to a biology adviser today to plan out my "4 years" I think I'll be done by Fall 2011 (taking it pretty slow.. 2 core classes+2 GE). I'm going to spend the rest of my time studying for the OAT then applying the following year. I really think that standardized tests are my weakness! 🙁

I have another question for you.. Since I have to take my general chem class over my adviser told me even though they dont like you re-taking it again at the univ. since you passed, she told me to do it anyway because taking at a CC and getting an A is probably same as C at univ. basically, she said it won't look good.

Do you guys think I should take it at my university or at CC?

Take it over at the same University. You have already taken it not to long ago im assuming, so just change your methods of study and do better. You have already seen the material. Though it would be nice to get an A, it might not seem possible to you and this could be multiple reasons, so just try to show as big of an improvement as you can.

I absolutely suck at Chemistry...and even if people say "gen chem is the easiest section on the OAT etc.. etc.." while i hope that is true when i take it in the future, i dont think i will do too well on it. I didnt do so well in Chem 1, but i did much better in Chem 2, showing a rather large improvement (2-3 letter grades up). If your like me, more of a bio/physics/math person then i am sure it will work out for you.

My advice to you...is even though you got C's, try to get A's in all the other pre-reqs. Take your chemistry over and just show an improvement. Also try to take more science classes to increase your overall GPA to be more competitive. Check the opted website for stats on the optometry schools you want to apply to.

Look at how your school handles re-takes. Some schools replace your grade, and some average it.
