Hi,

I am seeking advice on what science courses will benefit me for dental school? I am deciding between:

Immuno, Cell Neuro, Develop. Bio (has embryology), Cancer bio, Stem bio, Virology..

I am/ will be taking cell, micro, biochem, physio, and possibly Gross Anatomy ( which my school makes u memorize 1000 slides mostly and barely working on things).

Also, If I am missing a course that is needed, please let me know.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Histology is a big player in most dental schools and other than immunology it is probably better than anything on your list.

Thanks . I thought the rest of these courses wont do me much.. the anatomy at my school is bunch of slides.. should i take it at CC during summer break?

wut do you think about interm. molecular bio?

Wow, the courses listed here would sure help a lot at the dental schools!

It hard to imagine getting an in-depth anatomy course at a cc.

Actually i took my anatomy course at a CC, i had an amazing teacher...
Did you learn the insertions, interventions, origins down the the cervical number?

Histology is something you can pick up in DS with not too much trouble.

Gross anatomy is killer. Do that. Slides? No cadavers

Immuno and Neuro would be the best choices from that list. Developmental would be my third choice. Definitely take gross anatomy. Histo if you have time, but personally i think a good background with cell bio and even micro will give you a good enough foundation for histo.

cancer, stem and virology are certainly good courses, but they are rather specialized and so far none of my basic science courses have covered those in great detail. A good micro class should have some virology in it, any molecular bio class should have some info on cancer (or a cell bio class for that matter), and developmental bio class should have info on stem cells.

Just my opinion. If you want more clear-cut answers, I would ask the professors from those classes what material they will be covering so you don't end up with too much overlap.

yup 😀

Im tellin you its not always about where you take it , its about who teaches it!

You do claim an amazing teacher but do not make the same claim about the course. In any case, drop a note in a few years and do let us know how helpful your cc anatomy course was for ds.

To avoid starting a whole new personalized thread about the same thing...

...what do you guys think about taking Anatomy/Physiology, Molecular/Cellular Bio, or Mirco Bio?

I mainly looking to bump up my credibility in the sciences (wasnt a science major and just finished post bac) but would love to take subjects that would help me in D-school.

Which do you think (if any of these) would be best?

I heard from so many students at my school at they just bunch of slides a week and its boring. They barely do hands on cadavers.

also, They all recommand taking it as cc.. but would a summer course(6 weeks) of anatomy/physio be enough :-?

What about genetics? Anyone take it and find it useful for d-school?

I think genetics is an important course.. but I am a predent too..

anybody else wants to share their idea???

Thanks, guys. Genetics just didn't sound, intuitively, like it would be especially applicable to dentistry or dental school. But I like the genetics prof at my school better than the anatomy prof, so I'll probably just take genetics Spring semester unless the consensus was it was useless.

If any current d-students feel like elaborating on this one, plz do... 🙂
