Hello All:

Are you familiar with any GPR/AEGD programs that do not put emphasis on PASS and considers foreign trained dentist in their program after completion of NBDE part I and part II.
Though deadline to apply to some schools has already passed, I see that I can get chances in some schools.
Is there any list of such programs (Except for calling the individual program directors) I asked, some of them emphasize on accredited schools and PASS participation even though they would admit residents without these two criteria.

I would highly appreciate if any of you could provide me some information on this.

Thank you much.

where ever you apply make sure you ask as many questions about the place possible. never believe anything the director or adminstration says. only listen to what the residents say

Any thoughts on the NY Presbyterian Hospital GPR ? What other GPR's in NY/New England would you recommend checking out (or not) ?

Just little opinion on Columbia GPR..

Director...the nicest and coolest man alive!

BUT program is there to support Oral surgery program ---that's pretty much it. Oral surgery will dictate GPR life.... OS will even cancel your rotations such as ER or Anesthesia because they need you take more calls for OS.

Program :
1) on-call every third night for Oral Surgery, you answer your pager as " Oral Surgery resident"- there is no seperation as OS call vs dental call...you take care of them all...

2) you do all inpatient care for Oral sugery when you are on-call. You will be taking most of weekend calls for Oral surgery. They will arrange it so GPRs are doing most of weekend calls.
- expect to take all holiday on-calls... OS will tell you that's how the schedule came out to be...

3) You even get paged to transport OS inpatients from hospital floor to dental clinic for x-ray.

4) Since you are on-call so much, you have very few clinic days a month to see GP patients. ( WHEN YOU ARE ON-CALL, OS WILL NOT ALLOW YOU SEE YOUR PATIENTS )

5) Patient pool : you will see the worst patients in the dental school meaning, one with mulitple medical problems, psych problems and most annoying patient no one in the dental school want to see. Most of them need just cleaning or some restoration... I heard one guy did a ONE Root canal entire yr.

6) you will be known as " Oral surgery's Bitch" in the dental school.

7) you do morning rounds with OS everyday at 7 am...you will get pimped at rounds and their famous saying " they're just GPRs...."

Please remember there is reason why they ususally don't match anyone and one or two drops out during the yr.

If you need further proof, when you interview, ask AEGD residents...they will tell you some horror stories.. AEGD and GPRs share same room so AEGDs know how GPRs get yelled at ALL THE FREAKING TIME by OS attendings!!!

DON't BE fooled by the name : COlumbia Medical Center.... you will be miserable for 365 days...

Don't be fooled by OS resident there who will tell you that you will get awesome OS experience...their program SUCKS and there is not much to learn from ... THEY will not allow you go to OR with them...since their resident need experience too...
OS will NOT write you good letter of recommendation...since they don't want other OS program to find out GPR takes more OS calls, more inpatient cares, ER consult than OS 1st yrs....

SO DON"T GO to COLUMBIA GPRs!!! I hope no one matches there so OS can learn GPRs are not their bitch and unless OS change how they treat GPRs, no one will come and there will be NO ONE to take call!!!!

GOod luck people!

Wow.. it's been a long time since I've been on SDN....

Has anyone been contacted by GPR programs in NJ yet?

Hi there!!!
On of the pedo residents at my school went to St. John's Mercy for GPR. He really liked it. According to him you get to do stuff like:
1.Implants
2.Lots of Trauma care and extractions
3.Well balanced program

He said that he was very happy at the program. Also, I worked with him during his Oral Surgery rotation, he is very confident and good at his work. He would volunteer to do the procedures like Incision and Drainage, Difficult impacted 3rd molar extractions, that were usually assigned to the Oral Surgery Residents and he was pretty good.

Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Any calls for GPR at Tufts or Mount Sinai?

Thanks Koplik, it was helpful. I am going there for an interview.

I have an interview at Tufts for December 13th. They also offered November 29th. I also have an interview offer for BU. I actually don't know a lot about these programs since I'm coming from California. If anyone knows about these programs, I'd appreciate the information. Thanks.

(Also, have/had interviews at Jacksonville, Venice City UCLA, Oregon GPR, Long Beach, BU and UW in case anyone is wondering)

Actually, if you know anything abou BU, Tufts, UW, Venice City or Oregon....

Tufts-Lots of Medically compromised dentistry, Dr. Terenzi is very cool.
BU- Clinic in the same floor as Oral Surgery. The present resident there is very happy. Dr. West (Course Director) is simply amazing. She is there most of the times helping out her resident. I had a chance to work with Dr. West, she is an excellent clinician and a great Boss.

Good luck.

HI:

Could anyone please give information on how many programs generally a person applies to? What is the difference between applying through PASS/ Directly to the program? I know that PASS is centralized service for application. If you are interested in individual programs, can't you just apply to that program? Does it many any difference in acceptance criteria??
I would appreciate if someone could guide me.
Thanks

Does anyone know anything about Carolinas medical center GPR, medical college of Georgia(GPR), Dallas VA(GPR), Tennessee(GPR), GAinesville(VA GPR), Brigham and Womens(Harvard GPR)
THanks

The Oregon VA is an ok program, the directors philosophy is that you learn by doing, so there isn't a lot of formal instructions. you do a lot of removable, no real implants,
UW is a good background in medicine, Dr. JOhnson is awesome, I had a friend go up there and she liked it alot. Any specific Q's about those two programs I might be able to shed some light

i was wondering if any of the VAs in california have started their interviews for GPRs yet. (specifically, sf, long beach, palo alto, san diego, mare island)

I have a friend who got an interview to palo alto VA but I dont know when the interview is yet, maybe a couple of weeks

Hi anyone been to or know anything about AEGD programs for UOP, at Union City and Stockton sites?

I heard the Union city interview is a tough one, can anyone confirm or deny it? Any information helps ! thanks 🙂

Not to piss on the parade, but I actually got a rejection letter today.

But it was my "I wish/long shot" program.

Hey Drill Doc I am sorry to hear that. What program sent you a rejection? Does this mean that they did not invite you for the interview?

No interview invite, but they will keep my app on file. It's a Mid-West school. No biggie.

Has any one interviewed for the GPR in Gainesville? Just wondering what to expect as far as questions they may ask. Any advice would be helpful as well. My interview is next week!

i couldn't agree more. their GPR is more of OS assistant except the pay. actually if you calculate the hours the dental assistants get paid more than you (GPR). my friend is currently there and can't wait for the year to be over and spit on their faces before she leaves. avoid it if you can.

make sure you talk with the AEGD residents before you leave, they will give you the lowdown on the GPR (OS assistant) program.

Wow. Thanks for the feedback. I actually decided a while back that I would most likely not be attending this interview, just going by the stuff I have heard about this GPR from SDNers and friends (which has always been pretty consistent, and along the same lines).

The magic of SDN.

Does anyone know anything about the VA san diego program? Strengths /weaknesses..I've heard its mostly just dentures and OS.

VA SAN DIEGO
Interview dates:
December 12 13 17 18 20
Monday, January 7
Offered : Nov 19
Form: Email

I had an interview at UOP Union site. The clinic is really nice and very similar to private practice. The interview was tough though, they asked a lot of questions ie: why you want to do residency, what do you think of implants, who do you think should place implants, how do your friends describe you etc. Overall, I liked the program and the director.

hi every 1 can ny 1 tell me whats the procedure to apply for gpr ?and what r the requirements for that

Any info / lowdown on any of the following? Interviews coming up for a few of them...

Mt. Sinai in NYC
Morristown Memorial Hospital
St. Joeseph's Regional Medical Center
Hackensack Medical Center
Jersey City Medical Center

Cheers!

Anyone hear about the GPR programs at University of South Carolina or at Jackson Memorial in Miami?

Just wondering if anybody knows if interviews have been scheduled at the Baltimore VA yet?

I also have GPR interviews at ECU (Greenville, NC), Las Vegas...any info on those?

Thanks for the help
