Definitely second the post above! I actually just finished the AEGD program at Pittsburg 2 months a go. It was absolutely wonderful and worth every minute of your time. Here are some pointers:
-UCSF has several sites, as you have gathered from the post above. Each site will do something different, while focusing on similar core requirements of the program (set by LMC). You can schedule a visit to all the sites by emailing their directors (let me know if you need their info; ill PM it to you). They are all extremely welcoming and will give you an honest opinion on why you should/shouldn't chose a specific site.
-I chose Pittsburg and was very satisfied with the experience. Some major positives about the site:
1) Director is awesome! A program, in my opinion, depends HUGELY on how the director wants to run it. And you will have a very capable, honesty, helpful, approachable and motivating director. The entire team, in fact, is just great! Very easy to get along with and laid back.
2) Freedom and flexibility. You will be part of a team of several generals and specialists, so it's more of a private clinic type setting (as opposed to school/hospital). You have your own patients and your own treatment plans.
3) Exposure to specialties. All specialists are available on site on different days, minus Ortho.
-Endo is a major focus here, mainly because the director is big on Endo. He has a lot of up to date equipment and will thoroughly teach you how to do good anterior + posterior endo.
-You will get a fair amount of fixed and remo as well.
-Perio surgeries like CLPs, osseous surgeries, frenectomies, open flap debridements....all of this will be there for you to learn, but if you wish to focus on something else, you'll easily be able to. LMC does not have any perio surgery reqs, as far as I remember. But I did a lot of perio work, mostly focusing on CLPs.
-Oral surgery. A LOT of surgical exts. You won't perform any major OS procedures, however, any and all types of extractions are fair game. There is an OS faculty on site once a week, and they will guide you through some of the difficult exts.
-Pediatric dentist also on site to help you with pedo cases. I didn't focus on pedo at all (just doesn't appeal to me! ), but you can take on as many pedo patients as you like.
4) Equipment. The stuff they use here is top class. You will get to work with a lot of different gadgets and products. SOme of the work that the director does is completely state of the art!
5) You have your own chair/bay and assistant. I hate changing work stations...absolutely hate it! So this was awesome😎
Now,
-if you wish to learn implant placement, you will not be able to do it here. There are very few AEGDs that will actually teach you how to place implants. However, restoring them is fair game. You'll get plenty of experience on it. My first implant case, ever, was an implant supported anterior bridge 7x9! Great experience 😀
-high cost cases such as multiple veneers are not THAT common. You will have cases from time to time, but don't expect too many of them.
PM me if you have more questions. I'll be glad to go through them. 👍
Good luck!
